A vascular study assesses your circulation and how well blood flows through your arteries and veins.
Vascular studies are noninvasive. They use high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) and other imaging techniques to provide real-time photos of your arteries and veins.
At Queen Of Hearts Cardiovascular & Family Healthcare, Dr. Marshall and the team use vascular studies to diagnose various circulatory issues, including:
Vascular studies can also help detect varicose veins.
At Queen Of Hearts Cardiovascular & Family Healthcare, Dr. Marshall and the team offer several types of vascular studies, including:
A carotid doppler ultrasound is a vascular study that checks the circulation through your carotid arteries –– two large arteries on either side of your neck that deliver blood from your heart to your brain.
During treatment, Dr. Marshall runs a handheld device along the side of your neck. It emits high-frequency sound waves that bounce off your carotid arteries. A computer interprets the signals by converting them into images. If your ultrasound reveals narrowed or blocked arteries, Dr. Marshall makes treatment recommendations.
A peripheral arterial doppler is a vascular study that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to check the circulation in your peripheral arteries (the veins and arteries in your arms, legs, hands, and feet). It can identify narrowing or blocked arteries that may increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
A venous doppler is a vascular study that assesses the flow of blood through the veins in your lower legs. This type of test can identify potentially serious issues, like deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot deep inside your legs).
The type of vascular study that will most benefit you depends on various factors, including your age, health history, and symptoms. After a physical exam and a review of your medical records, Dr. Marshall can develop a screening schedule that aligns with your needs.
